Amygdala: Efferent Projections
The central nuclei of amygdala send axons to PAG (periaquaductal gray matter), reticular pontis nuclei, lateral nuclei of thalamus, peribrachial, and PVN (periventricular nuclei of hypothalamus).
Interconnectionss of Amygdala
The interconnection within amygdala is shown below.
The primary auditory LTM depends on amygdala. The freezing and startling reactions might be mediated by different mechanism of NMDA receptors.
Efferent Projections of Amygdala
The bed nucleus of stria terminalis and substantia innominata can be classified as extended amygdala.
From | Function |
---|---|
PAG | freezing |
Reticular pontis nuclei | startle |
Lateral thalamus | cardio |
Peribrachial | breathing |
PVN | stress |
