Cerebellum: Anatomy

The cerebellum mediates dexterity, balance, and perception.

The sections of the cerebellum shows traces of evolution. The archicerebellum (flocculonodular lobes) is the portion of the cerebellum that evolved the most earliest that can be found in fish. It controls the balance and eye movements. The paleocerebellum (anterior lobe) controls muscle tone and posture and takes proprioceptive input. The neocerebellum (posterior lobe) controls planning and proprioceptive evaluation.

The paleocerebellum (anterior lobe) and neocerebellum (posterior lobe) are separated by a structure called primary fissure.
