Cerebellum: Cellular Structure
The figure shows the three layers of the cerebellum cortex: molecular layer, Parkinje layer, granular layer.
The molecular layer contains basket cells and stellate cells. Neurotransmitter: GABA(inhibitory).
The Parkinje layer is single Parkinje cell layer. Neurotransmitter: GABA(inhibitory). The dendrites of Parkinje cells are planar. All efferent fibers from the cerebellum are form Parkinje cells. The afferent fibers to cerebellum are climbing fibers which synapse with Parkinje dendrites, and mossy fibers which synapse at granule layer to make glomeruli.
The tens of billions of the granule cells of the granular layer sends their unmyelinated axons to molecular layer where they bifurcate to parallel fibers which runs horizontally. The Golgi cells in the granule layer sends dendrites into the molecular layer. Neurotransmitter: GABA and glycine(inhibitory).
