Each section of the thalamus sends projections to its corresponding cortex, i.e. frontal cortex to DM, premotor cortex to VA, motor cortex (M1) to VL, primary somatosensory cortex (S1) to VPL/VPM, association sensory cortex to LP.

The anterior and dorsal medial nuclei sends their projections to cingulate cortex. The interlaminal nuclei projects its fibers to basal ganglia and association cortex via axon collaterals (not shown).
