There are three kinds of cone cells: R, G, and B cell, each responds best at red, gree, and blue, respectively. The ration of the contrasting color cell response distinguishes each color, even with colors with the various brightness. The retinal ganglion cells, the RGB opponent cells, R-G cell pair, B-Y cell pair create contrast, thereby distinguish color.
